Documenting Perkins Rural Eligibility

With Perkins grant applications due October 12th, now is a good time to review the complex rural eligibility guidelines OCTAE has put in place to ensure you application meets all the priorities laid out by the Department of Education.

Perkins Innovation and Modernization grants are a critical funding source for high schools to expand implementation of career-connected programs that prepare students with a career plan, college credits, work experience and industry-recognized credentials. Up to 20 awards are available with a total budget of $24.25 million.

Rural applicants will see 25% of grant funds set aside to serve their communities. That set-aside is available if in addition to meeting absolute priorities #1 (career-connected high schools) and #2 (equitable access) they show that the proposed project will serve students residing in rural communities.

Qualifying as a rural applicant requires additional data. Applicants must meet Absolute Priority #3 outlined on page 20 of the application instructions and meet at least one requirement outlined on page forty of the instructions. Pair the checklist on page 40 with the NCES school district search tool to find your eligibility.

We at Aspect Works are available to assist in the final stretch of your application process, whether it’s double-checking eligibility, providing outside insight into your narrative or editing and ensuring all your application documents are ready to go before the October 12th deadline.
