EDA Tech Hubs Phases I and II

Administration announces Phase I designations, phase II Notice of Funding Opportunity.

Earlier this week the Biden-Harris Administration announced the designation of 31 Tech Hubs across the United States. Funded by the CHIPS and Science Act and overseen by Commerce’s Economic Development Administration, the Hubs are part of an economic development initiatives to drive regional innovation and job creation towards the goal of increasing American competitiveness.

The Tech Hubs focus on industries including autonomous systems, quantum computing, biotechnology, precision medicine, clean energy, semiconductors and more. Applicants that were designated as Tech Hubs may apply for phase II of funding, also announced earlier this week.

A total of $500 million is available for phase II awards, with $150 million max per single award and an expectation of 10 total awards. The close date for applications is February 29th.

The EDA states in their notice of funding opportunity that, “awards made…will seek to strengthen U.S. economic and national security through place-based investments in regions with the assets, resources, capacity, and potential to become globally competitive Tech Hubs, within approximately ten years, in the technologies and industries of the future, and for those industries, companies, and the good jobs they create to start, grow, and remain in the United States.”
